MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee police say they've caught a House of Corrections inmate who escaped from a van while traveling to a doctor's appointment. House of Correction assistant superintendent Jeffrey Mayer says 23-year-old Martin Williams had been held there since May 8 on a charge of armed robbery with threat of force.

Four inmates charged with aiding escape

Four jail inmates who authorities say helped eight others in a brazen escape were charged Wednesday, as officials kept searching for five prisoners who remain on the loose, including a convicted murderer. Two people close to the fugitives were also arrested. Authorities said the four inmates, who were not among the escapees, face six charges each, including assisting escape and harboring or aiding a felon.

EAST LANSING -- Three Grand Rapids-area men were ordered to jail in connection with an April 6 Cedar Fest riot. Tyler Cizek, 20, of West Olive, was sentenced to 20 days in jail after pleading guilty to throwing an object, the Lansing State Journal reported.

Probe into Fulton inmate abuse is expanded

The FBI has extended its investigation into claims of inmate abuse at the Fulton County Jail to include an Aug. 9 incident when officers allegedly beat an inmate who was in handcuffs and leg chains, a spokesman said Tuesday. FBI spokesman Steve Emmett declined to give details beyond confirming the bureau’s investigation of possible inmate abuse had expanded to include the case of Christopher Trammell, who was injured in the beating. The FBI already was looking into whether jailers beat another inmate, Richard Glasco, so badly he died from his injuries last March.

A Big Island man who caused a 2006 car crash that killed two women has been indicted for allegedly assaulting a corrections officer at the Hilo jail. A Big Island grand jury indicted Vernon Costa, 43, on a charge of second-degree assault for allegedly injuring the officer on Sept. 29, 2007.

CLOVIS, N.M. — Eight inmates, including a convicted murderer and another man charged with murder, escaped from a county jail by cutting a hole in the roof, authorities said Monday. Two inmates had been captured by Monday evening. Six remained at large and were considered dangerous, Curry County Sheriff Matt Murray said.
The escape was discovered Sunday night when police saw two people in orange jumpsuits running near the jail, Murray said.

KEY WEST, Fla. - Monroe County authorities say someone tampered with a jail oven to try and create an explosion and fire in a detention center. According to an incident report, a piece of clothing, along with a container of a substance that could have been flammable, were left inside a propane gas oven that was left running in the Monroe County Detention Center on Sunday morning.

Authorities are still searching today for a minimum-security inmate who escaped the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in Otay Mesa on Sunday. Manuel Casillas, a 24-year-old inmate serving time for a second-degree burglary conviction, was last seen at Sunday's 6 p.m. inmate count, according to prison officials. Small police forces get lift in transporting prisoners

Police officers from small departments throughout the area will be spending more time on the streets and less time transporting prisoners to and from the Luzerne County Correctional Facility in Wilkes-Barre starting Sept. 1. Luzerne County Sheriff Michael Savokinas volunteered his deputies to transport prisoners from the county lockup to Luzerne County Central Court, also in Wilkes-Barre, for preliminary hearings.

The Dutchman insisted on taking the witness stand even though he was warned by the court that he could incriminate himself since he was being accused of trying to escape and of assaulting the prison wardens.

At least 100 improvised weapons were confiscated from inmates at the Manila City Jail Monday following the riot that left one detainee dead over the weekend. The seizures took place as jail officials swept cells for sharpened toothbrush handles, ladles and lead pipes. Officials also confiscated slingshots and spiked nails form the inmates.

Escaped Inmate Caught in Manassas

Some Manassas residents got an unusual wake-up call Wednesday: a police helicopter hovered overhead while K-9 units sniffed the ground and patrol cars lined the streets. Authorities were looking for an escaped prisoner, Eric J. Pezely, 23. Just before 6 a.m., Pezely had slipped out of his handcuffs while he and several other prisoners, who were chained together, were being led to court by three jail officers, authorities said.

One was killed and another was injured when a riot went off between warring gangs inside the Manila City Jail Saturday afternoon. An initial report said the rumble erupted at around 3:20 p.m. between members of the Bahala Na and the Komando gangs. Victim Eduardo Mandap, 28, died while being rushed to the Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center. He succumbed to a gunshot wound in the nape.

Dutch prisoner guilty of smuggling cocaine into prison - Dutchland

A Dutch prisoner who was allegedly beaten by four prison warders was jailed for a further nine months and fined e600 after he was found guilty of smuggling cocaine into the Corradino Correctional Facility. Perry Ingomar Toornstra, 28, is serving 15 years after he was found guilty of importing over 4,000 ecstasy pills and 460 LSD trips in 2000.

Two B.C. inmates being sought after escape from Nanaimo prison - Canada

NANAIMO, B.C. — RCMP say two inmates are at large after escaping from the medium-security Nanaimo Regional Correctional Facility last night. Twenty-five-year-old Allen Delmar Fandry is Caucasian, five-feet-nine inches tall and weighs 134 pounds. He has brown eyes and short, dark hair. Fandry has skulls tattooed on his right forearm, and a mushroom with a face on his chest.

Officer facing drug charges

A state Department of Corrections officer remains suspended from duty at the Saginaw Correctional Facility after his arrest in connection with a BAYANET investigation of drugs in the prison. Undercover officers arrested John J. Singer III, 45, Tuesday in the parking lot at Fashion Square Mall in Saginaw Township as he was attempting to receive a half-pound of marijuana, Bay Area Narcotics Enforcement Team leader Lt. Mel Matthews said. The marijuana had a street value of about $550.

States work to curb jail violence

Serving time in prison isn't supposed to be easy. Surviving prison should be. That wasn't the case during much of the 1970s and '80s, during which time a prison riot in Attica, N.Y., left 43 dead and a riot in Santa Fe left 33 dead. As recently as 1980, the murder rate in prison was nearly five times as great as in the general population. "It was certainly a rougher time, where your emphasis was more on reprisal, retribution, punishment," said Shelby County (Tenn.) Sheriff Mark Luttrell, a former warden at three federal prisons and a member of the Commission on Safety and Abuse in America's Prisons. "We were a rudderless ship there for years and years without oversight."

Prison guard pleads guilty to felony theft

The North Branch man who was arrested and charged with theft entered a guilty plea yesterday, Aug. 20, to felony theft from the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Rush City. William R. Stanley, a sergeant at the prison, had been under investigation by the Department of Corrections, the U.S. Postal Service, and the Chisago County Sheriff’s Office when a search warrant was served at his residence on May 15.

IONIA - Michigan State Police officials are investigating the stabbing of a 32-year-old a prisoner at the Ionia Maximum Correctional Facility. According to Michigan State Police Det. Sgt. Mike Morey, the inmate received multiple stab wounds in one of the housing units around 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Another Pinal County jail inmate kills himself

A 45-year-old man committed suicide inside the Pinal County Adult Detention Center early Wednesday, marking the third time an inmate killed himself in just over a month. Jail staff found Ricky Mann, who was physically handicapped, dead just after midnight. He strangled himself by tying a sheet to his medical walker, sheriff's officials said.

Three inmates attempting to escape from the Tarrant County Jail on Wednesday morning injured two guards and a maintenance worker, authorities said.

Ionia prison remains on lock-down after stabbing

IONIA -- The Ionia Maximum Correctional Facility remains on lock-down following this week's stabbing, allegedly by fellow inmates, of a convicted murderer serving 25 to 50 years in prison. The warden's assistant said today that the inmate who was attacked, Melvin Chancy, 32, did not have life-threatening injuries, but remains hospitalized with multiple stab wounds.

Lawsuit: Va. sheriff could have prevented killing

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. - The widow of a hospital security guard killed by a jail inmate as he escaped has filed a $9.8 million lawsuit claiming the Montgomery County sheriff and three deputies could have prevented the death. Cindy McFarland contends in the circuit court lawsuit that the defendants should have considered William Morva's violent history when he was taken to a hospital for treatment in August, 2006. Morva knocked out a deputy and took his gun, which he used to kill 32-year-old Derrick McFarland.

Idaho inmate commits suicide in Texas

The Idaho Department of Correction is investigating an Idaho inmate who apparently killed himself while imprisoned in Texas. Randall Demont McCullough was found in his cell at the Bill Clayton Detention Center in Littlefield, Texas, just after midnight Monday.

Corrections officer charged with drug trafficking

SAGINAW COUNTY -He was watching prisoners at a Mid-Michigan facility, but police say he was bringing them drugs. A corrections officer at the Saginaw Correctional Facility has been formally charged with drug trafficking. John Singer, 45, of Burton, was charged with two counts Wednesday morning, and police believe the drugs he planned to buy were going to go inside the prison. "Mr. Singer, you charged under count one of controlled substance, delivery and manufacturing of marijuana," said Saginaw District Court Judge A.T. Frank.

Inmate facing felony charge for alleged attack on guard

WILKES-BARRE –An inmate who was awarded $35,000 in a settlement of a brutality suit against the Luzerne County prison has been charged with aggravated assault for allegedly breaking the nose of a prison guard. The charge filed Tuesday against Nicodemo DiPietro stems from the alleged assault in March 2006 against correctional officer Stanley Fiedorczyk – the incident that DiPietro claimed led other guards to beat him while removing him from his cell.

Poorly planned escape bid at Kingston Pen a bust - CA

Two federal inmates trying to escape from Kingston Penitentiary managed to get onto the roof of the maximum security prison and attach a homemade grappling hook to the razor wire near the walls before getting caught by officials last week. The attempted escape happened at about 1:30 p.m. Friday, according to a Correctional Service of Canada statement. Kingston police say an inmate in his early 40s and another in his late 50s had somehow made their way unnoticed to the rooftop of the gymnasium, about 12 metres away from the prison's west wall near Lake Ontario.

Prisoners killed in New Bell jail fire - SA

Yaounde - Nine prisoners died on Wednesday in a fire in Cameroon's notoriously overcrowded and rundown New Bell jail in the west African country's economic capital Douala, the penitentiary's chief said. The country's most populous jail is crammed with more than four times as many prisoners than its original capacity. "The fire began around four in the morning in the Regime wing which houses 1 468 prisoners," Joseph Tsala Amougou said over telephone.

Women accused of prison trafficking

Indiana State Police arrested two women suspected of trafficking with inmates at Pendleton prisons this weekend.
On Saturday, at approximately 3 p.m., Trooper Andrew Sparks was dispatched to the Pendleton Correctional Facility and arrested Stephanie Lewis, 39, Indianapolis. Lewis was arrested on suspicion of trafficking with an offender, dealing 27 grams of cocaine, possession of cocaine and trafficking a controlled substance.

Jail’s private operator plans investigation

LISBON - A spokesman for the private firm operating the Columbiana County Jail said company personnel will work with Sheriff David Smith to investigate an escape of four prisoners and take the necessary steps to ensure it doesn't happen again. "They'll evaluate what transpired," CiviGenics Senior Vice President Peter Argeropulos said Monday.

PRINCESS ANNE -- Somerset County Commissioners and other officials may have been made aware of problems at the county's detention center long before the launch of a police probe last year, according to documents included in a Wicomico Bureau of Investigation report. A handwritten statement from two former correctional officers document problems they witnessed at the jail, as well as steps they took to report them.

Jury awards former prison guard $350,000

A federal jury has awarded $350,000 to a former Nevada State Prison guard who sued the former head of the Department of Corrections after he was fired allegedly for bringing DVDs into a gun tower while on duty. Richard Cosgrove argued that the DVD claim was bogus and said he was fired for publicly criticizing the management of the facility after a new warden, William Donat, was brought on board and ended a list of inmate programs.

VINELAND - A report that a female Cumberland County corrections officer allegedly left her gun in a public restroom at South Jersey Healthcare-Regional Medical Center on Sunday night is being investigated by the county Department of Corrections.

Five-Acre Blaze Near Bannock County Jail

Firefighters had their hands full Monday with a five-acre brush fire just south of Pocatello. The fire started around 11:00 Monday morning near South 5th and quickly spread toward the interstate. Crews from the Pocatello Valley Volunteer Fire Department were first on scene. They were later joined by the Pocatello Fire Department and crews from the BLM.

Death at jail investigated

BARBOURSVILLE -- Authorities continued their investigation into the death of an inmate who was found dead Saturday night at the Western Regional Jail in Barboursville. Joe Thornton, Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety deputy secretary, said David L. Beaman died in what appeared to be a suicide at the jail at 9:16 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16. Efforts to resuscitate Beaman by the jail's internal medical staff, the Barboursville Volunteer Fire Department's EMS and the county EMS failed, Thornton said.

SFCounty Jail inmate facing additional charges after attempted escape

A Forrest City man already facing felony charges for a May escape from the St. Francis County Jail will now have another date before the judge after allegedly attacking a jailer Monday night. According to a report from the St. Francis County Sheriff’s Department, Christopher Davenport, 21, 224 W. Dooley, Forrest City, was charged with second-degree battery and first-degree criminal attempted escape after he allegedly punched a jailer and wrestled with him in an attempt to take the jailer’s keys.

'Growing violence' at UK prison

An inspection of one of Britain's high-security prisons has raised concern about levels of violence. Frankland Prison had become even more challenging with rises in gang links and the arrival of a small number of convicted terrorists, the report said. The HM Inspectorate of Prisons found serious incidents of prisoner-on-prisoner violence at the Durham jail. The National Offender Management Service said issues raised in the report were being addressed.
The Prison Reform Trust said the report was a "timely warning". The inspection acknowledged that HMP Frankland holds some "extremely challenging prisoners" such as those with affiliations to gangs or a history of extreme violence.

Union: Guards need protection tools

The Corrections Association is calling for defensive tools to protect prison guards, as Auckland Prison at Paremoremo remains in lockdown after gang fighting left four inmates with stab wounds. While the prison is in lockdown, guards are going over the jail from top to bottom in a search for concealed weapons.

The US Navy has announced that six sailors working as prison guards in Iraq will face court martial for abusing detainees. Two prisoners are alleged to have suffered minor abrasions and eight others were injured after they were allegedly sprayed with a riot control agent and held in a sealed cell. The incident took place at Camp Bucca, a large US military camp in southern Iraq used to house about 18,000 prisoners.

Newport News Jail inmate's death being investigated

NEWPORT NEWS - The Newport News Sheriff's Department has identified the jail inmate who died yesterday after being found unconscious in his cell. Bruce Raymond Parker, 46, was in the Newport News Jail awaiting sentence on two counts of parole violation. He had been arrested on July 7.

Ex-prison official will face three trials in sex case

The former head of security for Virginia's largest women's prison will face 30 counts of having carnal knowledge of inmates divided into three jury trials. Patrick Owen Gee, 45, appeared briefly in Fluvanna County Circuit Court yesterday for a motions hearing. Jeff W. Haislip, the county's commonwealth's attorney, considered trying all three cases together but withdrew his motion.

Inmate killed at federal penitentiary

An inmate at the U.S. Penitentiary in Florence was killed Sunday in an attack involving a handmade shank. Mark James Baker, 40, had only been at the facility a couple months, according Fremont County Coroner Dorothy Twellman. On Sunday afternoon, he was sitting with a group of inmates, playing cards when another inmate reportedly came up behind him and stabbed him in the neck.

Two men get state prison in related 9mm gun cases

SCHENECTADY — A 9mm handgun was at the center of two sentencings Friday. In one sentencing, prosecutors gained valuable insurance against a convicted killer. In the other, prosecutors fulfilled their end of the bargain with an important witness to the killing. Omari Lee, 27, was sentenced to four years in state prison in connection with possessing the 9 mm handgun during a January 2007 shootout on Prospect Street.

Forty inmates staged a riot in ITK-16 penitentiary located 40 kilometers south of Bishkek at 21.00 yesterday, August 14, Deputy Justice Minister Sergei Zubov informed the news agency "24.kg". Special task forces that arrived at the riot scene surrounded the entire perimeter of the prison. Despite all the efforts of the special forces to take the situation under control, two officers of the Main Department for Penitentiaries were stabbed to death by an inmate sentenced to life imprisonment Kadyrbek Abdyshev, 1965. Abdyshev was sentenced under Article 97 of the Criminal Code ("Murder").

Camp St inmate found with gun, ammunition. Stepped up security at prison

Prison officers at the Georgetown Prisons yesterday afternoon discovered a prisoner with a .38 revolver and eight matching rounds of ammunition in his possession, sparking an intense lockdown and search. According to a police press release, the discovery was made at approximately 3 pm and the prison authorities called in the police and a search of the entire complex was conducted.

Lawrence County inmate dies at Springfield prison

State prison inmate Patrick Powell, 52, died Friday at the Mike Durfee State Prison in Springfield. He was serving a 15-year sentence for aggravated assault in Lawrence County. An autopsy will be conducted. The state Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the death, which is routine in the death of a state inmate.

Mistakenly freed inmate captured

A man who had been mistakenly released from prison was arrested in West Baltimore last night, a Baltimore Sheriff's Office lieutenant said. Thomas Lee, 26, was arrested without incident by members of the sheriff's special operations team as he left a house in the 2900 block of Edmondson Ave. about 7:40 p.m., Lt. Sam Cogen said.

DANNEMORA, N.Y. - State officials say an inmate at a northern New York prison died a few hours after assaulting a guard. Department of Correctional Services officials say 52-year-old Bradley Ceasar assaulted the guard Monday afternoon after being ordered back to his cell at Clinton Correctional Facility near Plattsburgh.

Deputies with the Carson City Sheriff's Office are looking for an inmate who escaped while performing duty work. Sheriff Ken Furlong says 20-year-old Kyle Carpenter walked away from the animal shelter on Butti Way in Carson City around 4 p.m. Saturday.

Suspicious powder leads to Jail lockdown

Charlotte County - The Charlotte County Jail was locked down Wednesday afternoon after a white substance fell out of a letter in the mail room. The Charlotte County Hazmat Unit is now on scene. They went into the building at 2:49 p.m. to do preliminary testing. The new mailroom is in a smaller building detached from the main jail structure but according to established procedures, the entire jail is now in lockdown. The smaller building does not share HVAC systems.

Prosecutors want Ohio inmate to wear stun belt

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Federal prosecutors want a prison inmate to wear a stun belt during his upcoming trial on charges he escaped from a hospital, robbed two banks and took hostages before surrendering. Billy Jack Fitzmorris, 35, requires extra security because he has damaged jail cell sprinklers and has been caught with contraband in his shoes, said Deputy U.S. Marshal Tom Genz.

Sedgwick County jail inmate dies

A Sedgwick County Jail inmate died Sunday at a Wichita hospital, and authorities said that an autopsy will be done on the man. The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Department said that 46-year-old Gary E. White died at about 8:15 a.m. at a Wichita hospital where he was receiving treatment for existing medical issues.

Plan to transfer inmates in Oklahoma jails could help avert violence

Officials with the state Corrections Department are hopeful that transferring nearly a dozen inmates to out-of-state facilities will help stem the violence that prompted seven state facilities to be locked down and inmate movements and visitation restricted. Justin Jones, executive director of the Department of Corrections, said the department is in the process of transferring several inmates to prisons outside Oklahoma. Jones said the inmates being transferred have been linked to fights at prisons in May and late June.

A Somerset County Jail inmate accused of attempting to escape from the jail’s work release center by setting off a fire alarm will go to trial. Kenneth Lee Rose, 25, will face charges of assault by prisoner and aggravated assault, both felonies, false alarms of agencies of public safety, a misdemeanor, and a summary harassment. His attorney, Kenneth Johnson, of Somerset, stipulated to the charges Tuesday at a preliminary hearing before Somerset District Judge Arthur K. Cook.

2 employees admit smuggling contraband into Union County jail

A janitor and a corrections officer have admitted in an Elizabeth courtroom that they smuggled cigarettes into the Union County jail for inmates. The janitor, Joseph Pecoraro, 37, also admitted Tuesday to supplying a cell phone to one inmate, convicted murderer Jeremy Watson.

BSO Changes Transportation Policies After Deputy’s Death

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The death of a BSO deputy leads to some changes in security and prisoner transportation policies in Broward jails. In November 2007, deputy Paul Rein was transporting a prisoner who was in a wheelchair from jail to court. The prisoner was able to get out of his wheelchair and kill Rein. Michael Mazza was charged with Rein's death. As a result the department took a comprehensive look at how prisoners are transported.

DOC: Fire accidentally started near youth prison

CHESTERFIELD -- A fire yesterday in the laundry facility of the Albert C. Wagner Youth Correc tional Facility was extinguished with only minimal damage to the laundry and no injuries, the state Department of Corrections said. Deirdre Fedkenheuer, a DOC spokeswoman, said the blaze at the prison off Ward Avenue was acci dentally started about 4:30 p.m. by workers who were grinding a gate at the rear of the laundry facility. She said sparks from the grinder ignited pieces of lint in a "piece of laundry equipment" that was not in use.

Deputies Negligent In Quadriplegic Inmate Dumping

TAMPA - A Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office corporal was fired and a second deputy resigned over the treatment in January of a quadriplegic inmate, according to internal affairs reports released Tuesday. Six others were suspended without pay or reprimanded for not intervening when Deputy Charlette Marshall-Jones tipped inmate Brian Sterner's wheelchair and dumped him on the floor of Orient Road Jail's central booking area, the investigative documents said.
The findings showed cause for Cpl. Decondra Williams to be terminated, which occurred June 6. A hearing officer recommended a five-day suspension for Deputy Dawn Thomas, but a disciplinary review board found the charges of failing to act and following procedures unsubstantiated. She resigned anyway on May 12, the reports said.

Inmate dies while incarcerated at Wells County Jail

An inmate at the Wells County Jail has died while in medical isolation. Jared S. Schoeff, 22, of 120 North Johnson St., died Tuesday at Bluffton Regional Medical Center where he had been transported from the jail by Wells County EMS. According to Sheriff Bob Frantz, Schoeff apparently suffered from an obstructive airway disorder in which growths formed on his airway that required laser surgical removal every three to four months.

Court officials said Norman Heflin slipped out of a handcuff and bolted from the van after it arrived at Providence District Court. About 15 minutes later, he was spotted and arrested just blocks away on Point Street by two plainclothes officers from the Providence Police Department.

O.C. inmate: Jailer kicked, punched him with key in fist

SOUTH BAY — A prison inmate confessed to crafting a homemade bomb to try to blow up a guard, and the guard has been charged with smuggling contraband into the prison, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said. Jordano LaGuerre, 24, of Lauderhill was arrested Tuesday afternoon at the South Bay Correctional Facility on charges of making an explosive device. According to the report, deputies called in to investigate a bomb threat Tuesday morning found four empty honey bottles filled with gasoline and connected to batteries and wires.

Jamie Long, 41, was arrested around 3 p.m. at her home at 5116 E. 9th Street, 6News' Jack Rinehart reported. Authorities were searching Thursday for Pender, 29. Police said Pender was driven outside the gates of the Rockville Correctional Facility Monday by corrections officer Scott Spitler. Police said Long then picked Pender up in the parking lot of the prison. Authorities did not say what the relationship was between the two women.

PORT COQUITLAM -- A prisoner escaped from North Fraser Pretrial Centre by impersonating another inmate, RCMP say. Coquitlam RCMP have issued a Canada-wide arrest warrant for Dean Sykes, of no fixed address. Police say Sykes appeared in Port Coquitlam Provincial Court Tuesday posing as 42-year-old Timothy Broadbent. Sykes returned to North Fraser Pretrial, where he was released from custody under the belief that he was Broadbent.

Police arrest another person in connection with a convicted murderer who escaped and is still on the loose. The Indiana Department of Correction say US Marshals arrested 41-year old Jamie Long of Indianapolis on Thursday. Investigators say she picked up Sarah Pender outside the Rockville Correctional Facility when she escaped Monday. Meanwhile Rockville Correctional Facility officer Scott Spitler faced his family and a Parke County judge for the first time since his arrest.

A Jessamine County deputy jailer is recovering after an inmate attacked him early Thursday morning. The attack happened at the Jessamine County Detention Center on E. Maple St. It's unclear what started the attack, but jail employees called for emergency workers saying the guard was hurt after an inmate went out of control.

DOTHAN, Ala. - An investigation has found that a sheriff's corrections officer ran a red light and caused a three-vehicle wreck that left a state prison inmate dead. The findings were released Tuesday by Houston County Sheriff Andy Hughes. He said the report by Alabama state troopers found that Officer Michael Brian Shelley was talking on his cell phone at the time of the crash on July 22 at an intersection in east Montgomery.

A Summit County sheriff's deputy has been acquitted of murder in the death of a mentally ill jail inmate. Stephen Krendick's actions as he and others attempted to subdue Mark McCullaugh in a jail cell were not the proximate cause of McCullaugh's death, visiting Summit County Judge H.F. Inderlied ruled today. He said he will file his complete ruling Thursday.

SUMMIT COUNTY — While cleaning out the cells in the Summit County Jail, guards found an unfamiliar plastic bag on top of one of the inmate’s bunks and opened it to find a medley of rotting fruit and bread. Given that it is unlikely that an inmate would be experimenting with composting, guards determined that the concoction was “hooch,” a liquor made from fermented fruit.

A prison transport company and its driver last week denied responsibility in a February crash that claimed the life of a Chatham woman. Tiffany N. Chaney, 23, died in a Feb. 3 crash with a van carrying prison inmates. The accident happened on Route 40, about five miles west of Gretna. Chaney's husband, Carroll Chaney Jr., is suing Brevard Extraditions Inc. of Melbourne, Fla., and driver Julio R. Alicea of Orlando, Fla., for $25.3 million.

The accident report has been released on the wreck on July 22 in Montgomery involving a Houston County corrections van in which an inmate was killed. The report shows the wreck was caused by the driver of the corrections van running a red light. Authorities say 25-year-old Michael Shelley of Dothan ran the red light while talking on a cell phone which resulted in a three car accident and killing inmate Terry Irvin.

Madison County makes emergency purchase of jail fire alarm

Madison County will install a new $28,000 fire alarm system in the old portion of its jail. County supervisors this week approved an emergency purchase for the alarm system for the Madison County Detention Center in Canton “for the safety of the prisoners.”

ROCKVILLE, Ind. (WTHI) - The Indiana Department of Corrections told News 10 it all started Monday afternoon around 4 p.m. When prison officials discovered 29-year-old Sarah J. Pender missing from the Rockville Correctional Facility in Parke County. Pender was serving time for a double murder in Indianapolis, but the story does not end there. A correctional officer, Scott A. Spitler is now in custody, charged with helping Pender escape.

Two police cars crash in pursuit: Multi-agencies chase escaped Butte County Jail inmate

OROVILLE — A Butte County Jail inmate escaped from custody Sunday evening, resulting in a multi-agency manhunt and two damaged patrol vehicles. Oroville Police Chief Kirk Trostle said the inmate escaped from Oroville Hospital after being transported there for an injury incurred while in custody. The identity of the inmate could not be confirmed by Trostle and calls placed to the Butte County Sheriff's Office and the jail were not returned by deadline.

Michigan State Police are investigating the stabbing death of a 21-year-old prisoner at the G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility in Blackman Township. Frank Carnell Smith was involved in an altercation with another prisoner about 9:45 a.m. Saturday and the other prisoner apparently stabbed him, said Russ Marlan, Department of Corrections spokesman. Staff members at the prison on Elm Road heard the dispute, went to check on it and saw Smith fall to the ground, Marlan said, declining to release details because of the ongoing investigation.

NEWTOWN - The state Department of Corrections reported that an inmate hanged himself in an apparent suicide early Wednesday, July 23, at Garner Correctional Institution. An escaped Marion County State inmate was captured in Gulfport. Christine Lynne Shroeder was housed at the Marion County State Work Program. Around midnight Saturday she left her approved residence for a three day pass without permission.

Morning power outage prompts short jail lockdown in Indio

The Indio area had a power outage at about 11:30 today. Larson Justice Center, the Indio Jail, JFK Memorial Hospital, and some homes were affected, said Marion Champion of Imperial Irrigation District. It was not immediately known what caused the outage. Power was knocked out at the jail near midday, but auxiliary generators turned on a split-second later, according to Sgt. Dennis Gutierrez of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

New warden named at Baltimore's Central Booking

A Baltimore woman who has worked in corrections for 30 years is the next warden of the city's Central Booking facility. Naomi Williams started as a clerk in the Baltimore City jail in 1978. On Tuesday, she will be named warden of the Central Booking and Intake Center at a change of leadership ceremony.

Corrections officer arrested on charge of soliciting sex from a teenage girl

An officer at Coffeewood Juvenile Correction Center was arrested in Leesburg Sunday after using a communication system to solicit sex from a teenage girl, according to Lt. Wesley C. Corrections Officer Attacked; Juvenile Escapes

A Juvenile Corrections Officer was attacked by a teen inmate, who then stole his car. Before the attack, the 17-year-old inmate was taken to Wesley Medical Center to be checked for a possible injury. As he left with the officer, he complained his handcuffs were too tight. When the officer went to loosen them, the teen punched him in the face, jumped into officer's car, and took off.

Prison inmate indicted for murder

KINGSTON – An inmate at the Shawangunk State Correctional Facility in Wallkill has been indicted by an Ulster County grand jury for killing another prisoner. Luis Rosado is accused of stabbing Larry Davis to death with a 9 ½ inch by 1 ¼ inch flat metal shank on February 20, 2008.

Another area jail is dealing with the issue of prison overcrowding. With the inmate population at 51, the city of Eunice is 8 over its mandate set by the State Fire Marshall. Police Chief Gary Fontenot said his hands are tied, and a project to double the size of his facility actually back-fired, resulting in more prisoners to house, putting more of a strain on his budget.

GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba — Interrogators at Guantanamo Bay are asking detainees primarily about activity inside the U.S. military prison, the mission commander said, revealing a shift in focus from the wider fight against terrorism. CORPUS CHRISTI-The McConnell Unit at Beeville's state prison remains under lockdown after two convicted murderers were discovered missing during a morning inmate count Wednesday. Guards stopped and checked all incoming and outgoing cars at the prison due to heightened security.

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - A 54-year-old man has been charged with first degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor, and authorities say the victim was under 11 years of age. Former guard admits helping inmate escape

FAYETTEVILLE, W.Va. — A former Mount Olive Correctional Complex correctional officer has pleaded guilty to permitting the escape of a prisoner. Thirty-five-year-old Clarissa Johnson of Summersville entered her plea Tuesday in Fayette County Circuit Court. She told the judge she was overwhelmed and confused when she committed her crime.

ROSEBURG, Ore. -- A jail inmate climbed over a clear barrier in an interview room Wednesday afternoon and assaulted a private investigator before climbing into the crawl space above the ceiling, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office. A corrections deputy subdued the inmate with pepper spray but abandoned an attempt to take the inmate back into custody after discovering the ceiling supports were not strong enough to hold his weight.

Investigation launched into inmate's death

St. Bernard Parish law enforcement authorities have opened an investigation into the death of a man who was transported from the parish jail to a New Orleans hospital. Ryan Williams, 29, of Chalmette, died Saturday at University Hospital, an attorney representing his wife said. Williams had surgery to relieve swelling in his brain on July 16 after being brought to the hospital from St. Bernard Parish Prison, said the attorney, Rhett Spano of Baton Rouge.

Former guard admits helping inmate escape

FAYETTEVILLE, W.Va. — A former Mount Olive Correctional Complex correctional officer has pleaded guilty to permitting the escape of a prisoner. Thirty-five-year-old Clarissa Johnson of Summersville entered her plea Tuesday in Fayette County Circuit Court. She told the judge she was overwhelmed and confused when she committed her crime.
