Handcuffed inmate escapes after court appearance

A prison inmate has escaped custody while in handcuffs following a court appearance on the NSW Mid North Coast, police say.

Cleveland Madden, 22, attended Kempsey Local Court about 4pm yesterday and escaped as he was getting into a prison van.

Several inmates isolated following uprising

 A ruckus at the Gatineau Detention Centre on Thursday prompted prison officials to place several inmates in isolation to contain the situation.

At least three fires were lit by inmates during a change of shift by corrections officers, officials say. But damage was limited.

The union representing the guards said the detention centre is becoming a dangerous place of employment because of increased drug trafficking concerns and the influence of street gangs. 

Man. police charge 18 in prison riot

 WINNIPEG - Brandon Police Service has now charged 18 men for their alleged involvement in a riot at Brandon Correctional Centre last year.

Up to 27 inmates were involved in the Oct. 4, 2009 uprising, which was quelled by the corrections emergency response team, police said.

Six of the 18 men were still in custody at BCC and charged Feb. 23.

The rest have been charged by way of arrest warrants and are no longer in Brandon, police said.

4 more charged in 2009 prison riot

 WINNIPEG - Four more men have been charged for their alleged involvement in a riot at a Manitoba jail last year, bringing to 10 the number of people facing charges so far.

The Winnipeg Police Service arrested four suspects Feb. 26, assisting the Brandon Police Service, which is conducting the investigation into the uprising at Brandon Correctional Centre.

The men arrested by Winnipeg police had been transferred to a different facility or released from jail since the riot last October.

Prison boss under fire after convicts escape

 The SA Human Rights Commission has demanded that disciplinary action be taken against the head of Westville Prison, Bheki Mabanga.


This is after Mabanga said last week that eight dangerous awaiting trial prisoners managed to escape from the prison after the Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) had ordered that the electric fence be switched off. 

Inmate charged in prison cyanide death

 A Saskatchewan prison inmate has been charged with first-degree murder, 11 years after a deadly poisoning at a prison in Kingston, Ont.

Phillip Vince, 52, was arrested Tuesday at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary and charged in the death of 24-year-old Scott Barnett, said an Ontario Provincial Police release. He is to be taken to Napanee, Ont., for a court appearance Thursday.

Jail break in quake-hit Chile

 SANTIAGO, Chile—More than 200 inmates in Chile fled their prison on Saturday after the powerful earthquake caused a wall to crumble, jail authorities said.

The falling wall seriously injured one of the guards at the prison in the central town of Chillan and 269 prisoners poured out, said prison police chief Alejandro Jimenez, as quoted by the La Tercera newspaper's website.

Warder Is Slashed On The Face At Jail

 A PRISON guard was slashed in the face by a rampaging con in a frenzied attack.

The officer was supervising prisoners in the recreation yard of Edinburgh's Saughton Prison when he was attacked on Saturday afternoon.

Medical staff at the jail treated the shaken guard - who was taken to hospital.
