 A POLICE manhunt is being stepped up this morning in Victoria for a child sex offender on the run after giving prison officers the slip.

The Herald Sun reports the notorious child sex offender was supposed to be held under strict supervision but is on the run after walking out the back door of a suburban cafe.

The man accused of sparking a riot at Belconnen Remand Centre last year, in which six prison officers were taken to hospital, says corrections authorities provoked the trouble by calling prisoners scum.

Matthew James Massey is one of five former and current detainees to be charged over the violence at one of the centre's yards on January 5, 2009.

A prison inmate has escaped custody while in handcuffs following a court appearance on the NSW Mid North Coast, police say.

Cleveland Madden, 22, attended Kempsey Local Court about 4pm yesterday and escaped as he was getting into a prison van.
