Venezuelan prison riot leaves 6 inmates dead

Venezuela's top prison authority says a riot at one of the country's most notoriously violent lockups has left six prisoners dead and 15 injured.

Consuelo Cerrada tells Union Radio that inmates exchanged gunfire at the Yare I prison during Tuesday's clashes before authorities retook control. The jail is located on the outskirts of Venezuela's capital, Caracas.

The motive for the riot was unclear. Violence is common in Venezuela's overcrowded and understaffed prisons, where rival gangs often fight for control of cellblocks or the sale of illegal drugs.
